English Castles
Lindisfarne -
Holy Island, Northumberland
This medieval English castle
occupies a very romantic site. Medieval Irish monks built
an abbey's foundation on a point of land only accessible during
low tide.
These monks created beautiful
illuminated manuscripts, until Viking invasions forced them
to flee. In the 16th century, stones from the abbey were used
to build the castle, which is now owned by the National Trust.
