English Castles
Warwick - Warwickshire
With construction begun
in the late 11th century, this spectacular medieval fortress
had humble beginnings as a wooden building on a hill, surrounded
by a palisade. Stone work was added later, although non of
it survived.
This medieval castle was
home to the mighty Earls of Warwick, who played an important
role in the Wars of the Roses, and later, in the Hundred Years
War with France. This became a Parliamentarian stronghold
during England's Civil War.
The castle's Great Hall
was transformed from apartments and contains Middle Age armor
and weaponry. Ceasar's Tower and the dungeon display the darker
side of the Middle Ages dungeon, which contains a gruesome
medieval torture chamber. Jousting exhibitions, medieval festivals,
and craft demonstrations are held at Warwick Castle throughout
the summer.
