Welsh Castles
Conwy (Conway) - Gwynedd
Conwy Castle offers visitors a true medieval
atmosphere. This medieval castle was built as a fortress in
the famed "Iron Ring". To build these massive walls,
forced labor was used on a massive scale during the late 13th
century.
Conwy Castle is fairly straightforward
in design, and is composed of eight towers surrounded with
gray walls, 15 feet thick in some places. Its superior architecture
makes it appear that Conwy Castle is growing right out of
its rocky foundation.
The medieval fortress dominates the skyline
of Conwy, a well-preserved, medieval walled city. These Middle
Age walls are more than 30 feet high and stretch nearly a
mile long. The stronghold's 22 towers and three gates were
built strategically along the wall and had been beautifully
preserved.
